Strawberries and Kiwis are a popular combination in a lot of juices. They make a good pair in smoothies, too.

Kiwis are in interesting fruit. They are grown commercially in many countries, but most of them come from New Zealand, Italy, Chile and Greece. Here are some more facts about kiwis:

Kiwi Facts

1. Kiwis are also known as Chinese gooseberries, and the plant originally comes from northern China.

2. The first kiwi farms outside China were in New Zealand, and were started in the 1900s. By the 1940s they started to become popular in America, but the California company that imported them refused to call them ‘Chinese gooseberries’, and labelled them ‘Kiwifruit’ instead, after the New Zealand bird.

3. There are many different kinds of kiwifruit: the fuzzy kiwifruit, golden kiwifruit, arctic kiwifruit, red kiwifruit, baby kiwifruit, and more. The fuzzy kiwifruit is the most popular, although one can sometimes find golden kiwifruit, which has a sweeter flavor but shorter shelf-life.

4. Kiwis grow on long vines that are supported by large trellises or arbors. They require a lot of pruning, similar to grapes.

5. Kiwifruits grow on female kiwi plants, but they need male plants around for pollination. Only one male plant is needed for every several female plants.

6. Bees don’t like kiwi flowers very much, so kiwi flowers only get pollinated if a large number of bee hives are placed on the kiwi farm.

7. Kiwi fruits will ripen quickly if you put them in a bag with an apple or banana. Putting them in the sun does not help. Without help, they will usually ripen within 3 to 5 days.

The Health Benefits of Eating Kiwis

One of the best things about kiwis is that they are full of vitamins. They are very high in vitamin C, vitamin K, and vitamin E. They also have high levels of dietary fiber.

One interesting fact about kiwis is that they are a blood thinner. Eating 3 kiwis a day is likely to have as much blood thinning effect as regular aspirin therapy.

Strawberry Kiwi Smoothies

Most recipes call for more than one kiwi in a smoothie. Some people put as many as 4 or 5 kiwis in one smoothie. I usually use one to three. Here are some strawberry kiwi smoothie recipes for you to try.

Easy Strawberry Kiwi Smoothie

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • half a banana
  • half cup strawberries
  • 2 kiwis
  • 1 cup baby spinach.

Apple Kiwi Smoothie

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 2 kiwis
  • 1 apple
  • half cup strawberries
  • half a banana (optional)

Mango Kiwi Oatmeal Smoothie

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 banana
  • 3 kiwis
  • half a mango
  • quarter cup of oats
  • 1 scoop protein powder (optional, if you want to make it a breakfast protein smoothie)

If you don’t have any almond milk, feel free to use any other kind of non-dairy milk. And if you want thicker smoothies, add an extra banana. The above recipes have less banana than many other recipes, so as not to hide the delicate flavor of the kiwis.
